(n. 16 jun. 1938, Lockport, N.Y., EE.UU.).

Escritora estadounidense. Ha enseñado en las universidades de Windsor (1967–78) y Princeton (desde 1978). Escritora prolífica, sus primeros libros fueron la compilación de relatos By the North Gate [Junto a la puerta del Norte] (1963) y la novela With Shuddering Fall [Una caída estruendosa] (1964). A menudo retrata a personajes cuyas intensas vidas terminan en un baño de sangre y autodestrucción arrastradas por fuerzas que escapan a su control. Entre sus mejores novelas se cuentan Them [Ellos] (1969), Do with Me What You Will [Haz conmigo lo que desees] (1973), Puro fuego (1993) y Beasts [Bestias] (2002). Parte importante de su obra es una serie en que parodia el género gótico y que incluye títulos como Bellefleur (1980), A Bloodsmoor Romance [Un romance en Bloodsmoor] (1982) y Mysteries of Winterthurn [Los misterios de Winterthurn] (1984).
